SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (September 22, 2009) – NKK Switches, the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of innovative electromechanical switching devices, today announced it has been honored as a finalist for the 2009 Design News’ Golden Mousetrap Awards in the electronics category for its OLED SmartSwitch product.
Design News is a leading technical publication for design engineers. The finalists and winners for the 2009 Golden Mousetrap Awards were selected from a record number of entries and chosen based on the collective expertise of Design News’ editors.
“We’re excited that Design News named the OLED SmartSwitch as a finalist for the Golden Mousetrap Awards,” said Kiyoko Toyama, president of NKK Switches. “NKK is committed to providing engineers with switching and interface products that are innovative and differentiated in significant ways.”
The OLED SmartSwitch combines a pushbutton switch with a programmable OLED display in a single device and is the smallest off-the-shelf OLED display device available in the industry. The OLED display provides 65K colors and displays full-motion video at over 100 frames per second.
OLED devices offer many advantages over conventional LCD programmable switches and displays; including higher contrast and more brilliant pictures, 180 degree viewing angle from all directions, RGB full color, low power consumption, faster response times and no backlighting requirements.
In addition to the technological advances of the OLED SmartSwitch, engineers can easily access and apply a range of demo kits, development kits, online tools and application engineering support, making the evaluation and development time more efficient. Other supporting tools include graphic generation commands, communication interfaces and an on-board controller and drivers.
“Design News congratulates the winners and finalists of the 2009 Golden Mousetrap Awards for the great work they've done to develop new and innovative products for design engineers,” said Editor-in-Chief Karen Field. “These products showcase the highly imaginative ways that today's engineers are ‘building a better mousetrap,’ and we thank them for their contributions.”
For more than two decades, the Design News Awards Program has recognized engineering innovation and creativity in product design. This year, Golden Mousetrap awards were given in four major categories: Electronics, Motion Control/Automation, Hardware/Software, Materials/Fastening/Joining/Assembly, and 20 subcategories. Editor Jennifer Roy gathered a record number of entries and based on the collective expertise of the publication’s beat editors in each technology area, just 71 finalists and 23 winners were selected.
